I guess, I'm famous now

After almost 20 years of tattooing, it finally happened. I, NYARTMAN, have successfully tattooed my first celebrity.  Lead guitarist for Daughtry, Josh Steely, stormed into town performing with the band to sold out concerts and on daytime talk shows like Live! With Regis and Kelly.Josh steely's whirling dervish tattoo When Josh told me he was the guitarist for Daughtry, I asked him to spell the band's name for me so I could check them out.  He asked me, "So you haven't heard of us?" and I was like "Uuuuh, no".  Then he told me about the connection with American Idol and the Grammys won.  I've never even seen American Idol.  What do you expect, I'm a 24 hour workaholic, tattooing nerd.  I don't even own a TV and the only music I listen to is Jazz, Metal, Blues and Goth/Industrial in about equal parts.  I guess it's safe to say that I'm pretty out of touch with main stream America.

Josh had me work on a couple of pieces for him.  One was a design that he put together of an abstract whirling dervish image with a quote from Rumi's writings: "Why should I seek? I am the same as He. His essence speaks through me. I have been looking for myself!" The other was a lightning fast two and an half hour touch up job of a Buddha piece on his forearm.   This piece was really bothering him, but I, NYARTMAN, using my superior  meditational  skills on that schmutzed up Buddha was able to bring Josh from samsara to nirvana.  (see below).  If I only had more time, perhaps I could have transformed Josh into the "Tattooed Buddha".  Maybe one day after touring like a mad man he will revisit NYARTMAN, the Tattooing Master of Gotham, for a custom tattoo transformation.

Anyway, I asked Josh, who by the way really is a genuinely nice guy, if he would mind taking a butthole buddies photo with me, which he kindly obliged.  Proof of this monumental occasion had to be documented.  This is the day that, NYARTMAN, King of Gotham City's underground art world became... "Tattoo Artist of the Stars". josh steely of Daughtry and NYARTMANSo watch out Kat Von D, Don Ed Hardy, and Paul Booth I'm coming for ya.  I'm famous now, damn it.  Ya'll best recognize!

"I recently visited NYC for just a day and really wanted to get a tattoo. Being in a touring rock band gives me very little time to find a great artist. After calling a few shops I could find no one interested until I called Jeremy the NYARTMAN! As soon as we spoke I knew he is an artist who cares about his craft. After visiting his website and seeing his credentials I felt honored that he juggled his schedule to help me get the piece I was hoping for. His professionalism and demeanor are at the top of the bar. His artwork is world class, and the prices very reasonable. No longer will I search for an artist on the east coast again!"

- Josh Steely (guitarist from Daughtry)

Since I had the opportunity of tattooing Josh, I've done my homework and now I know... Daughtry kicks ass! Thanks Josh for the confidence you placed in me and for all the kind words.  NYARTMAN wishes you guys the absolute best, knock em dead!

New York City Tattoos

New York City tattoos are always a pleasure to do.  Over the years I've had the privilege of doing several.  Just this week I got to do a very interesting looking NYC design from the 1930's.  Although the piece wasn't a custom NYARTMAN design I thought it would be very appropriate to create a page specifically showcasing New York tattoos that I've gotten to tattoo over the years.  This list is far from being complete; unfortunately, I've left some of my client's work out due to my poor record keeping.  If you've gotten a NYC related tattoo from me in the past, please email a picture to me and I will add it to this page.  I'm looking forward to seeing how the work on this page grows and develops.

New York City Tattoo Shops

New York City tattoo shops are a dime a dozen. Spend ten minutes walking in Gotham City and you'll stumble across one. Amazingly every one of them is the “Best tattoo shop in NYC” with the “Best tattoo artist”! Just ask them or visit their website and they'll tell you so themselves. But don't be fooled by these self proclaimed virtuosos. Here are a few simple steps you can take to make sure you are dealing with a top notch, experienced, professional tattoo artist.

The very first thing you should be looking for is a current tattooing license. It should be clearly displayed and not tucked away in a file cabinet. If you don't see it, ask to see it, they should be more than happy to show it to you. In New York City every tattooist has to have their own tattooing license, a shop license does not cover every tattooist in the shop, it would cover only the person whose name is on the license. This may seem a bit trivial and it obviously has nothing to do with the tattooist's artistic skills; however, obtaining a New York City tattooing license is no joke. All licensed New York City tattooist have to prove proficiency in infection control, utilization of universal precautions as recommended by the federal centers for disease control and prevention and proper methods of waste disposal. You can get a better understanding of what licensed New York City tattooists have to know by visiting the CDC's website and reading through their NIOSH Safety and Health Topics. Do not trust your health to an unlicensed tattooist no matter how inexpensive their work is or how nice their portfolio looks.

After you have determined that you are in fact dealing with a legitimate licensed tattoo artist then check out how sanitary the shop and their work station is. Once again they should be happy to give you a tour of the shop, show you the work stations and their autoclave. You should not feel in the least bit uncomfortable in asking and any respectable studio should be very understanding of your concerns. Also ask to see the needles that they use. They should be individually packaged and show the date that they were sterilized. The tabletops, tattooing furniture and floors should be non porous and free from ink and grime. Basically the place should be spotless. Just like with restaurants check their restrooms, if they take the time to make sure their restroom is clean then they probably do at least as good of a job with their work stations. No matter how great the tattooist is or how great of a bargain they give you, if they are not licensed and the studio isn't completely sanitary... forget about it!

Once the two previous steps have been taken and you are still interested then look at the artist's portfolio. A skilled professional tattoo artist will have nothing to hide. The photos in their portfolio will be large and clear. The body of their work from the line work to the coloring should be clean and precise. While each piece in the tattooist's portfolio may not be the same stylistically, they should be consistent technically. Check to see what their previous customers have to say about them. Do they have client testimonials in their portfolio? NYARTMAN does and even more than one, check them out!

Of course you will save yourself a lot of grief if you simply deal with the one and only world famous, inkslinging superhero NYARTMAN.  If; however, you have some warped and unrefined taste in art and find NYARTMAN's masterful work not your particular cup of tea then follow these simple steps to insure you are at least dealing with a professional. Moreover if, for whatever reason, you don't follow this advice and end up with a tattoo that you're not totally pleased with (and everybody laughs at)... don't worry he does awesome cover-up tattoos, after all NYARTMAN is the Best Tattoo Artist in New York City!!! I mean it, he's the best I tell you!  Learn it!  Gawh!

A Focused Determination

Finally the last of the mighty IE7 bugs were destroyed.  I, NYARTMAN, was victorious.  It wasn't easy, no, but in the end I buried a metal slug in the IE7 browser's head.  It was a beautiful thing.  Now that I am free from it's evil clutches, my full creative faculties are once again focused on stitching kick ass illustrations into the hides of humanity.

There are a few projects that I'm so excited to finish. One is this crazy griffin back piece.  There's also an insane dragon piece that starts on this guy's back and winds up on his chest.  Actually there are two projects in the works that fit that description, but one is specifically a hydra, the nine headed dragon from Greek mythology.

By the way, if you happen to notice any broken links or typo's on NYARTMAN.com please send me an email stating the problem and where you found it.  Feedback is always appreciated.
