Tattooing Over Scars

Many people ask me, “NYARTMAN you are the famous suuuuper genius tattoo artist and I want to know, can scar tissue be tattooed like regular skin?”  Very good question.  Well, let me put it to you this way... if you have scarred areas that you would like to get covered with a tattoo then you will be happy to know that the answer to that question is “Yes!”; however, it is important that you are well aware of the possible complications associated with tattooing scar tissue. I, NYARTMAN, have successfully tattooed over many scars but this should not be attempted by a rank amateur.

Covering scar tissue with a tattoo is not a problem as long as you understand that scar tissue, itself, does not always react the same way regular skin does. They are fickle creatures and tattooing even the same type of scar does not guarantee the same results. If you are considering having a scar tattooed it is very important that you make sure the scar is completely finished healing. This can take several months and in some cases a year or longer. If the scar is still red or a angry pink color you should give it more time to heal before getting it tattooed. Know that the tattooed area directly where the scar is may not be as uniform and even as the skin around it. Also line work on scars have a tendency to “blow out” or look thicker and/or more blurry. Another factor to keep in mind is that some people are extremely sensitive to having scar tissue tattooed while other feel nothing at all.

Of course all of my clients who wanted their scars tattooed were happy with the results... after all I am NYARTMAN the inkslinging superhero. What... did you think I would disappoint them? Bottom line, if you are wanting to cover up your scars with a tattoo then you will be happy as well; however, I feel it is important that you are fully aware of the process and potential complications. If you are not happy we can always cut the tattoo off and when the area heals up, try again later. I mean it's not like it's going to look any worse than the horribly disfiguring scar that you had before, right?
